Four generators, the same 192 prompts, and the scores that came out. Plus what each one costs and what you're allowed to take home.

Every one of these turns a text prompt into a finished song with vocals and arrangement. They differ in three things: how good the result sounds, what you're allowed to walk away with, and how much of your money the credits eat. The third one is where most people get caught — generous generation limits mean nothing if you can only download seven tracks. The order below follows WildSongBench, the most recent published evaluation to put open and proprietary models side by side on the same 192 prompts.

Runs on YuE2. On WildSongBench it posts the highest SongBench average of all seventeen settings evaluated, ahead of Suno v5, v6 and v6 Wild.

What sets it apart isn't only the score. YuE2 doesn't jump straight from words to audio: it writes the melody and the chords down first, as an actual score, and then performs them. That middle step is why you can take the sheet music and the MIDI away with you, why a cover keeps the original tune instead of approximating it, and why asking for a second version gives you the same song again rather than a different one.

In practice: pick this if the song isn't the end of the job. If it's going into a video, a DAW, a rehearsal, or a set of parts for someone else to play, the score layer is the thing you'll miss everywhere else.

SongBench 6.8721 (v5)

The one most people mean when they say "AI music", and still the strongest single-prompt experience on the market.

Suno's strength is how finished a track sounds straight out of one description. You type a sentence, you get something that could pass for a demo. Its v5 model sits just behind YuE2 on WildSongBench and ahead of its own v6 — worth knowing, because newer doesn't automatically mean better here.

The catch arrived in September 2026, when downloads were capped. Generating stayed generous, taking the result away did not. If you make a lot and keep a lot, those caps decide your plan long before the credits do.

Mureka

Most production tools

The choice for people who treat the generated song as raw material rather than a finished product.

Mureka goes further than most on what you can take out: separated stems, MIDI export, voice cloning from a sample you own, and a mode where you hum an idea and it builds the arrangement around your melody. If the plan is to open the result in Ableton or Logic and keep working, that matters more than a tenth of a point on a benchmark.

The pricing is unusual in a good way: the cheapest paid tier already includes a commercial licence, where most competitors keep that for the expensive plan.

Udio

Instrumental realism

Often preferred for how natural the instruments sound, particularly on acoustic and orchestral material.

Where Suno aims for a finished radio mix, Udio tends to produce something that sounds played rather than assembled. Vocal expressiveness is a recurring compliment too, and credit allowances are generous next to the others at the same monthly price — which makes it a reasonable place to experiment heavily.

It's the least opinionated of the four about what you do next: fewer export formats than Mureka, no score layer, but a lot of generations for the money.

Where the ranking comes from

WildSongBench is an evaluation suite of 192 full-song prompts scored on nine automated musicality and alignment metrics. The September 2026 run compared seventeen configurations, open and proprietary, on identical prompts — which is the part that matters: everybody got the same brief.

The authors note that rankings vary by individual metric and that the gap between the top means is small. It's a measured result, not a verdict — but it's a published one, run on the same prompts for everybody.

On covers the margin is wider. Tested on 948 works, YuE2 with a full score reaches 0.647 CLEWS mAP for holding onto the original song's identity, against 0.006 for the same generator without a score. That gap is the whole argument for writing the melody down before performing it.
